Also what to do and see in Alaska's Favorite City. Seward is located on beautiful Resurrection Bay, just 125 miles south of Anchorage.

     Seward was founded as the terminus for the Alaska Railroad, because it was a deep water and ice free port. The rail was laid north through the mountains to the interior of Alaska. Daily passenger rail service leaving Anchorage in the morning, returns from Seward to Anchorage each evening during the summer, spring and fall.

     The town grew from a railhead town to a fishing village. For many years the people of Seward made their living fishing. Seward's small boat harbor reflects our seagoing past.  Nestled below Mount Marathon and on  beautiful Resurrection Bay, Seward is one of Alaska's true gems, and must be seen to be believed. Commercial fishing is still important to Seward's economy. Sports fishing is excellent and local Alaskans come to Seward to fish or just relax. Some of the best sports fishing on the Alaskan road system can be found in Seward. Fishing and Sightseeing Charters are available year round in Seward.

     The Mount Marathon race is run each Fourth of July in Seward attracting runners from all over the country. If you have never seen the race, its really worth the trip. Seward has hiking, mountain biking, boating, or take a day cruise and see the Kenai Fjord National Park. Or you can do some whale watching, bird watching or spend the day fishing for salmon, halibut, cod, or what ever your palate craves.

     There are hotels, B&Bs, good restaurants, glacier tours, helicopter tours, and some really cool shopping. Seward is for people who are serious about their fun. Seward is where Alaskans come to relax, because its the real Alaska. 

   The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) has a car and passenger 
water link between Juneau and Whittier in Prince William Sound. The AMHS service from Juneau in Southeast Alaska goes to Whittier in South Central Alaska. Whittier is 50 miles south of Anchorage and 75 miles north of Seward. The M/V Kennicott is the ship that does this round trip run between Juneau in Southeast Alaska and Whittier in South Central Alaska. If Seward is on your itinerary, just head south from Whittier to Seward, it's about seventy-mile down the Kenai Peninsula. We think it's the most beautiful part of Alaska and a trip you will never forget.  Seward will become you favorite Alaskan City too! Seward is one of Alaska's most beautiful cities. Set on Resurrection Bay, it's surrounded by snow capped mountains.
