Seward was founded as the terminus for the Alaska Railroad, because it
was a deep water and ice free port. The rail was laid north through the
mountains to the interior of Alaska. Daily passenger rail service leaving
Anchorage in the morning, returns from Seward to Anchorage each evening
during the summer, spring and fall.

The town grew from a railhead town to a fishing village. For many years the people of Seward made their living fishing. Seward's small boat harbor
reflects our seagoing past.  Nestled below Mount Marathon and on beautiful
Resurrection Bay, Seward is one of Alaska's true gems, and must be seen to
be believed. Commercial fishing is still important to Seward's economy.
Sports fishing is excellent and local Alaskans come to Seward to fish or just
relax. Some of the best sports fishing on the Alaskan road system can be
found in Seward. Fishing and Sightseeing Charters are available year round
in Seward.

The Mount Marathon race is run each Fourth of July in Seward attracting
runners from all over the country. If you have never seen the race, it’s really
worth the trip. Seward has hiking, mountain biking, boating, or take a day
cruise and see the Kenai Fjord National Park. Or you can do some whale
watching, bird watching or spend the day fishing for salmon, halibut, cod, or
what ever your palate craves.

The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) has a car and passenger
water link between Bellingham, Washington and South Central Alaska. The
AMHS also has once a month service from Juneau in Southeast
Alaska to South Central Alaska stopping at Whittier. The M/V
Kennicott is the ship that does this once a monthly, in summertime, round trip
run between Juneau in Southeast Alaska and Whittier in South Central
Alaska. If Seward is on your itinerary, just head south from Whittier to Seward, it's about seventy-mile down the Kenai Peninsula. We think it's the most
beautiful part of Alaska and a trip you will never forget.  Seward will become
you favorite Alaskan City too! Seward is one of Alaska's most beautiful cities. Set on Resurrection Bay, it's surrounded by snow capped mountains.
